Treatment Facilities & Programs

Luxury Treatment Centers

By Stacy Jackson, Addiction Treatment Specialist

It is a common misconception that drug rehabilitation centers are all akin to prisons or mental hospitals. While there are indeed some treatment facilities that do not focus on their patient's physical comforts, there are additional options available for those with the necessary financial means. Obviously, publically funded institutions are not going to offer hotel style accommodations. Tax payers would probably not be interested in providing expensive, unnecessary pleasantries, such as horseback riding lessons, to people forced into substance abuse programs by the criminal justice system. There are a number of privately run luxury treatment centers that cater to the rich and famous as well as unknown members of the jet set.

These places are often in exotic or secluded locations to enhance the feeling of privacy. Drug addiction is a highly personal issue, and isolation is especially important to those in the public eye. Part of the reason for entering an in-patient program is to remove the user from a stressful environment. Being stuck in an inner city neighborhood doesn't fit anyone's definition of relaxation, so it's no surprise that high end places avoid the hustle and bustle of major metropolitan areas. Luxury treatment centers usually strive to replicate 4 star hotel experiences by providing day spas, massage therapists, gourmet chefs, and room service. While this may sound more like a vacation resort, patient can rest assured that these places offer traditional services as well.

There's a luxury treatment center for nearly any affliction, though several well known spots cater specifically to the scourge of methamphetamine addiction. Crystal meth is reportedly harder to quit than other highly addictive drugs, such as heroin and cocaine. As such, lavish rehabs are trying to fill in the void for effective management. Each one has its own unique approach to healing. For example, Passages in Malibu, California believes that all addiction is the result of a past trauma. Patients receive individual counseling session instead of the typical group therapy meetings, so that they can get to the heart of their specific situation. They emphasize that the patient may not even be aware of the heartbreaking event, which is why they incorporate hypnosis to help uncover repressed memories. Desert Canyon, near Phoenix, Arizona, places detoxification at the top of its list of priorities. They have a sweat lodge to cleanse the body of harmful chemicals as well as acupuncturists on site. Desert Canyon tackles the anger crystal meth addicts struggle with on a daily basis through martial arts classes. Cliffside in Malibu, California suggests that chronic meth use causes significant changes in the user's brain. That's why their program lasts much longer than a single month. Their course takes place over a six month period and includes an after care regimen to assist the addict as he or she transitions into life in the real world.

Some upscale rehabilitation locations expect patients to arrive at their centers after the initial detox phase is complete. These places are not equipped to deal with full scale withdrawal symptoms. This portion of recovery is certainly the most difficult as users typically deal with unpleasant physical problems, including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, insomnia, stomach/muscle cramps, profuse sweating, and intense cravings. Naturally, patients going through these horrible feelings tend to be irritable, moody, depressed, and angry. It's best for heavily dependent users to undergo detox in the presence of a trained medical professional to avoid health complications. Detox usually lasts about two weeks, depending on the specific substance involved. However, there are luxury rehabilitation care centers that are capable of performing rapid detox for those in need of a quick remedy. For example, a movie studio may want an actor to go through an accelerated regime in order to meet production deadlines. Poinciana in West Palm Beach, Florida has this type of service for those that need to get clean in approximately 3 days. They personalize every aspect of patient's stay and have a medical staff on hand at all times. Poinciana does not concern themselves with long term success; their plan is purely designed to get someone sober, not ensure that the patient stays that way.

On the opposite end of the spectrum is Promises, which has two picturesque sites in Westwood and Malibu, California. Promises furnishes numerous amenities to make recovery comfortable, but they also concentrate on lifelong abstinence. Consequently, Promises might be the proper choice for crystal methamphetamine addiction. Their integrated treatment plan involves one on one counseling sessions with a clinical psychologist, which is a therapist with an advanced degree (PhD). Each patient is assigned a personal therapist in addition to the staff counselors and he/she may opt to continue working with the said psychologist after completing a residential stay. There's also an extensive Promises alumni network that holds weekly AA style meetings along with periodic gatherings in Los Angeles as well as New York. They believe that since addiction affects the whole family, the patient's relatives must be involved in the revitalization progression. Although the surrounding area is generally secluded, Promises tries not to isolate patients from the outside world. They permit visitors, television viewing, off campus group therapy meetings, and visits to a nearby gym. This way the patient learns how to cope with the trials and tribulations of daily life in a controlled environment.

Extravagant treatment centers are not for everyone. They cost at least $1,000 per day and insurance companies demand that patients pay most of the costs out of pocket. In-patient programs normally last a minimum of two weeks, so the price adds up in no time. Besides monetary concerns, patients should also strive to find a place that truly suits their medical condition. Scenic views are wonderful, but they will not help someone with methamphetamine addiction if the plan is built around opiate dependence. Remember to examine the recovery statistics before enrolling. An expensive estate may end up having the same relapse rate as a run of the mill local spot. Big screen TVs are no substitute for motivated, qualified healthcare providers. Ultimately, the patient determines his or her own achievement, and tabloid headlines are filled with stories about the rich and famous falling off the wagon even after leaving renowned healing clinics.

Don't let glitz and glamour get in the way of finding the best place for you or your loved one. Conduct your own research and go with your gut.
